About me
Hi, I'm kote! I'm a 20-something year old comp-sci student, with a sweet spot for furry stuff. The classic.
I'm a member of Hackerspace Pomerania (website in Polish), and I help out with the Rough Rat project.
My interests include (in no particular order):
- Computers (duh!)
- Gaming
- Furries
- Bikes and other forms of micromobility
- Electronics (sadly I'm absolutely terrible at that)

Random thoughts
This is where I might write down some random things to share with the world...
faggot.ovh
This domain? It's a short story. I just needed a cheap domin, to self-host my stuff. I really didn't care about the name, so I just looked for something cheap. Found out about .ovh being a thing, tried some combinations, and put in "faggot" as a joke. It wasn't taken. Now it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Running a home server is easy*
I've tried setting up a home server multiple times (back in 2021?), but always failing for some reason.
This time, I got fed up with Google Photos, and said to myself "enough". And it was around the same time I got some more experience working on the Hackerspace infra. So, what did I do? I grabbed a broken laptop, and installed Ubuntu server again. Soon enough, I found myself in a pickle.
My goddamn ISP switched to using only IPv6. Yes, it's possible to host stuff like that but... just no.
Some research later, people suggested Tailscale - and finally. I got a crappy old NAS for storage, a laptop as a server, ran some docker containers... and everything just worked. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it costs me almost nothing to run. And I can run anything, I decide what to do with it, and it's just... It's a weirdly cool feeling.
FFW to today. I got a used Thinkcentre M710q Tiny - with 32GB of RAM before the shortage too! What I ended up with, is FRP forwarding HTTP(s) traffic from a free Oracle server (that faggot.ovh points to) to my home. Then, I have traefik set up to just forward traffic from subdomains to my docker containers. Tailscale was fine for a basic website or whatever, but it turns out it's so slow, that even Immich was loading slowly. (when using Funnel)
Learning Linux might sound scary, but it really isn't. And frankly, I think running a Linux server is a better start than switching your main PC to a brand new OS. There are many tutorials you can learn with, but the best way to learn? Just do it. Grab that old laptop, a flash drive, and that's everything you need to start. Feel free to ask others in likeminded communities (our Hackerspace has a Discord server for example) if you need help, or even a clanker - it can help with most problems. Once you get some experience, you'll find out everything is incredibly repetetive.
